Toronto veteran Jason Amm (aka Solvent) has been at the forefront of contemporary synth-electro for the past 15 years. He has been releasing his genre-busting melodies and complex pop sounds since 1997, most notably co-founding and operating the renowned Suction Records – originally considered part of North America's first wave of IDM labels – with partner Lowfish until its demise in 2008. Solvent is best known for releases on Morr Music (2001's Solvent City) and Ghostly International (2004's Apples & Synthesizers, 2010’s Subject to Shift). Although he continues to incorporate a veritable treasure chest of vintage analog gear and drum machines in a way that neatly defies categorization, his fifth full-length record, Subject to Shift, also finds him taking a turn towards the darker, grittier sounds of acid and industrial. Solvent’s performance at MUTEK marks his return to the festival after a decade’s absence.
