Martín Borini & Tomás NochteffAR/DE
Martin Borini's practice explores, investigates and develops the possibilities of light and video; he's worked as a scenographer for theater plays, installations, performances and immersive rooms, while also experimenting with visual art's applications in electronic events through digital painting and VJing.
Long considered a notorious figure in Argentinian experimental music since his beginnings in the band Dios, Tomás Nochteff has also participated in other projects like Travesti, Tom Tom Lamas and Rode Draad until becoming one half of fruitful duo Mueran Humanos. Since 2022 he's focused on his solo career, deepening his applications of texture and poetry in his music.
Unfocusing is the act of not fixing your attention to a single spot, instead allowing it to disperse. It allows you to exist in the present without needing to direct each step towards a destination, without rushing a resolution. This audiovisual project proposes a way to exercise that outlook. An exercise to dodge, for a time, the decisive logic that structures our perception, which can become a trap.
Out of Focus, a project presented by Borini and Nochteff for this edition of MUTEK.AR, tries to shift to another perspective, using the audiovisual as a vehicle to skip past our need for resolution, remaining open to the formless and cultivating a more attentive presence.
The work implicitly presents different ways to embody this experience. It relies on sensory perception rather than a narrative; the audience can even watch the video with their eyes closed, letting light come through their eyelids and revealing the project's layers of sound. It doesn't seek to tell a story or arrive to a conclusion. It proposes a journey as a method of exploration, where uncertainty isn't an obstacle, but the very space where the journey takes place.
